When i was very young, my mom read me an aesop's fable called the miller, his son and their ass. this story has stuck with me my whole life, and i'm feeling a lot like the miller these days. while we work on this farm, struggling to keep every animal that comes to us healthy, happy and safe some times 10 to 12 hours in a day sometimes more if it's a sleepless night ; , we do the honest to god best we can to make everyone happy. lately though, we have run into what i like to call "nay-sayers" that don't like how we do things. it has always been our policy to let everyone work with these animals we take in, animals usually no one else wants or can no longer care for, and we give them the very best care and attention we can. we listen to a lot of good advice and learn what we can from all areas of animal care including other shelters, agriculture and veterinarian practices and attempt to keep the animals happy while they are here at the farm. and we believe we have. i've always thought that if this was such an easy job, there would be a lot more farm animal havens and sanctuaries available, but as you can see, there aren't, and it ain't easy! recently we lost one of our older horses who i was criticized for even attempting to make comfortable. another was a "nay-sayer" at animal faire who was completely dissatisfied with the farm and attacked one of our volunteers. after that, it really hit home that not everyone agrees with our policies or even what we do here. after a lot of tears, a lot of debating and evaluating whether or not this whole crazy farm is a good idea or not, i remembered all the animals that have crossed through our doors, the ones that have found new homes, the ones that just lived here till the day came for them to cross over that rainbow bridge, the ones that are still here or worse yet, the ones i still have to meet in the future and why they're being brought to this farm. i also remembered that for every animal that is here on the farm, there is someone that comes here and visits them, loves them and gives them attention and fusses over them, yes, even the pigs! ; i think of the support we have had and the support we still get, the endeavors we will face in the future and the lessons to be learned from these critters that live here at the farm and to whom they will teach these lessons to. it is daunting and scary. but thank you to all that are "yeah-sayers" and aren't afraid to get in on this, roll up their sleeves and pitch a little right back!!! please read the story my mom read to me and share it with everyone so it may continue to stick with people in the future! thanks aesop.
